Freedom FROM Judging, Freedom FOR Mercy

Hello Reader,

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, how much energy and emotion is spent (wasted) making judgments about others? What about reacting to those judgments, debating them, or amplifying arguments?

It's exhausting, isn't it?

Recently, while searching for the video of a song I wanted to enjoy, I stumbled upon videos full of controversy…jammed packed with judgments. That unexpected detour took me back decades, reminding me of a time when judging wasn't the burden it later became—back when judgment felt like a pastime, driven by a need to feel on the "right side."

Reflecting on Judgment's Weight

In an environment where critiquing others was commonplace, judging became second nature. But at what cost? It meant carrying a heavy load that consumes more energy and spirit than it deserves. Yesterday, I read these words from Henri Nouwen:

Once we are free from judging, we will be also free for mercy

I could relate to what Nouwen wrote (and I’m paraphrasing), the desert fathers described judgment as a heavy burden, while being judged is surprisingly lighter. Mercy, on the other hand, rejuvenates us, fills the emptiness with compassion, and is transformative in its simplicity.

Judgment is a heavy burden to carry. I now know that to be true. I carried it for years. Don’t get me wrong and think I’m always free from judging others. I wish that were true…and aspire for it to be true. I have discovered that mercy

Choosing Mercy

Today, I'm embracing an invitation: Let mercy triumph over judgment.

Imagine your social feeds infused with mercy instead of judgment. It can start with us—me and you. May we experience the renewing truth of mercy triumphing over judgment!

Judgment is wearisome; mercy uplifts and lightens our path.

This Week’s Invitation:

What areas of your life might benefit from trading judgment for mercy? Let’s choose mercy and feel its refreshing power transform our perspectives.

Until Next Sunday…

May you find peace in letting go of judgments and discover the boundless joy and freedom that mercy brings.

With gratitude…and mercy,

Kevin
