Hello Reader,
How are you spending the moments that are becoming your life?
Writer Annie Dillard died this week.
One sentence from her book The Writing Life has stayed close to me for years:
“How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.”
Her words have me wondering about an even smaller unit of our lives:
The moment.
How we spend our moments is how we spend our days.
And how we spend our days is how we spend our lives.
Our lives are shaped not only by milestones, but by ordinary moments:
A conversation around a table.
A phone call we almost didn’t make.
A familiar story.
A longer hug.
A moment when we pause long enough to truly see someone.
Most of these moments don’t announce their importance while they’re happening.
And together, they become our relationships.
They become our memories.
They become our lives.
Annie Dillard spent a lifetime noticing what others might easily miss.
Perhaps one way to honor her life and her words is to become a little more attentive to the life unfolding right in front of us.
So today, I’m wondering:
What moment is asking for your attention?
Notice it.
And perhaps, do something because you noticed.
Kevin
