Hello Reader,
Have you ever walked away from a conversation feeling genuinely seen, heard, and valued?
Maybe the person said something encouraging. Maybe they asked a thoughtful question. Or perhaps they simply listened in a way that made you feel like you mattered.
Sometimes, it’s difficult to put your finger on exactly what made the difference.
But you know you felt it.
Some recent conversations got me wondering about that lately.
What if what you bring into a moment matters just as much as what you do in that moment?
For years, I’ve appreciated the value of asking good questions.
But I’ve come to recognize that what matters most isn’t necessarily the quality of the question.
It’s what motivates me (or you) to ask it.
Are we trying to demonstrate what I know?
Are we trying to guide someone toward a conclusion?
Or are we asking because we genuinely care about that person and want to understand what they’re thinking, feeling, or experiencing?
That distinction has been on my mind. I saw it in action this morning.
And it’s led me to wonder about something bigger.
What do we bring into the moments we’re given?
Not just what we say or do.
But the presence we offer.
Our attention. Our curiosity. Our assumptions. Our willingness to listen. Our genuine care.
Sometimes, I think we become so focused on what we need to accomplish that we give less consideration to how we want to show up.
And yet, haven’t you experienced conversations where someone’s genuine interest made all the difference?
Maybe you couldn’t even remember everything they said.
But you remember how it felt to be with them.
I’m beginning to wonder whether the posture we bring into an ordinary moment can influence possibilities we might otherwise miss.
Not every meaningful moment can be planned. Some of the most important ones surprise us.
But perhaps we can become more intentional about the presence we bring into the moments that are already unfolding around us.
Here’s a question I’m carrying into this week:
Who do I want to be for the person in front of me?
I’m going to spend some time living with that question.
Perhaps you’d enjoy carrying it into a few moments of your own.
I’m grateful we’re exploring these possibilities together and appreciate you sharing your insights and experiences.
With gratitude…and anticipation,
Kevin
